Uncomfortable Allies

Uncomfortable Allies: Work by Guillermo Celis
May 1 - May 31, 2021, on Artsy

Life is polarity, it is made up of elements that contribute opposite aspects to human life such as birth and death, construction and destruction, tranquility and fear. Fire and water are two of these components that polarize reality. "Uncomfortable Allies" is Guillermo Celis's Chinese ink on paper series that allows the viewer to reconnect with these two fundamental life elements. His artistic inspiration is the analysis of the opposition and compatibility of these components, a recurring emphasis in his work.
.
Through these artworks, the viewer goes through sensations of peace, hope, strength, fear, passion, tranquility, where at times water and fire unite without confrontation, and in others, they become opponents that eliminate each other. Thus, they both change, at certain moments they provide vitality and at others, they generate catastrophes.

Just like water hypnotizes with the movement of the waves of the sea, and fire catches the eye with the flames of a campfire, this series hypnotizes the viewer through its lines and colors, where the individual’s thoughts flow like water from relaxation to agitation and like fire thoughts create warmth and shelter but also suffocation and helplessness.

Water is characterized as a purifier of processes and generator of life. It is vital for the planet and those who inhabit it. It is also a vehicle in which beings, energy, and emotions can travel. Water's sometimes ally and at other times opponent, fire, contributes to maintaining body temperature in certain places, it is a tool to create artifacts, cook food, and eliminate bacteria. At the moment when these two elements come in contact, a harmonious and yet chaotic fusion appears and gives rise to the creation of a new element.
