DESTINATIONS UNKNOWN: Southern California Road Maps | Lynda Keeler
February 1-28, 2021
On view exclusively on Artsy
Lynda Keeler's fascination with maps comes together in a series of paintings that abstractly chart areas of Palm Springs, Los Angeles and Laguna Beach that are part of her daily walks. Occasionally they aren’t pinpointed to a specific location but rather a place she’d like to explore. The paintings become a bit like treasure hunts where she reveals changes to a neighborhood and the surrounding spaces.
Each painting uses a palette that reflects the dominant elements of each neighborhood be it flowers such as Jacarandas or Bougainvillea or the boulders and cactus near Joshua Tree. Arrows are key parts of the compositions and are used as directional guides in each map along with their symbolism as cultural and historical icons.
Deliberately using un-stretched linen these paintings are fluid and relaxed and evoke flags, maps and quilts. With layers of paint, ink, nail polish, fibers, and sand each painting has allusions to architecture, gardens, street structure and signage. Shapes overlay each other with transparency and blurred edges suggest shifting boundaries and borders. These hint at the uneasy and messy way the man-made built environment intersects with the natural landscape.
