Paul Seftel: Dream Within A Dream

On view: June 1 - 30, 2022, on Artsy

For the last 25 years, Paul Seftel has developed his unique work and fascination with landscape, space, light and time. His powerful and emotive abstract expressive paintings expose hidden depths from the natural world and explore color-field and minimalist ideas and processes using stone, metal minerals and pigments.

By conjuring unspoken emotions, these original paintings are reflections of a journey and the forces of nature that carve and forge our world. Compositions are built up over the surface of the canvas revealing hidden depths, layer upon layer of handmade paints and mixtures created with stone and metal minerals and raw pigment. The works capture Seftel's intrigue and study of ancient civilizations, the essence of personal and spiritual ceremony, and the observation of environmental change, mineral mining, oceans rising and space exploration.

These visual meditations re-imagine painting; the process of time appears accelerated. Nature expresses its transformation in hues of blue-green and turquoise patina. Seftel brings together processes and practices that involve abstract expressionist, action painting and color field notions and ideas.

About the artist:
Born in London, England, in 1974, Seftel has lived and worked across the US for the last 25 years, including the California coast - Carmel/Monterey for five years,  NYC for nearly a decade, and many years living in Colorado and exploring the Southwest US.

Making art since childhood, through Seftel's teenage years, art became a tool for a journey of self-discovery and realization. After a "death/out of body experience" at age 21, his world changed and work shifted into exploring the metaphysical realities beyond the edge of seeing.
