Alan Powell is an abstract expressionist artist, who has been painting and drawing since childhood. From his studio in the high desert of Southern California near Joshua Tree, he derives inspiration from within and the mystical nature of the ancient surroundings of Joshua Tree National Park.
His early interest in physics landed him a partial scholarship at the University of California, Berkeley. His deeper interest in art, however, directed him to complete a BFA in painting and print making at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
His work has been exhibited and collected for 40 years. His work includes prints, drawings, paintings, video, projection, and process pieces ranging in size from 8”x10” to 4’x6,’ including signed print series. As part Native American, Alan is attracted to repetitive symbols of bowls, arrows, pyramids, and mantles and drawing present life parallels. His paintings are reflective of dialogs on dreams, mystic experiences, prehistory, interstellar space, transcendence, and the ever present chance of humor.
