On view: February 5 – 27, 2022
Joshua Tree Art Gallery: 61607 29 Palms Hwy, Suite B, Joshua Tree, CA
Gallery Hours: Saturdays 9 am – 3 pm and Sundays Noon – 3 pm
Artists' Reception: Saturday, February 12, 6 – 8 pm
Asher Grey Gallery partners with Joshua Tree Art to present Threshold, a group exhibition featuring artists Blake Baxter, Frederick Fulmer and Mike McLain. Threshold is defined as "the magnitude or intensity that must be exceeded for a certain reaction, phenomenon, result, or condition to occur or be manifested." All three artists utilize color, texture, pattern and alternative mediums in minimalist or abstract ways to entertain the eyes of the viewer. To thoroughly experience the art, a viewer must cross the gallery's threshold to observe and engage with the work that results in pushing their way of seeing light and space.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Blake Baxter is best known for reductive monochromatic paintings incorporating aggregates such as sand and cement. His work is optical- focusing on light and space as a way to affect the gaze of the viewer. Often working with black acrylic washes and many dense layers of sand, he creates a reflection and movement that changes under different lighting conditions. This quality makes this work ever changing with direct viewing imperative. Even though the medium is static and minimalist, the darkest areas still glimmer. "My pieces are constructed with minimal materials. I follow repeatable processes of sequenced steps that yield variation despite my efforts to minimize the same. The result is a loosely structured communication, which, when met by perception, seeks to establish form." | www.blakebaxter.com
Frederick Fulmer is inspired by the magical landscape of Joshua Tree; the light, open space and quiet capture his attention and allow for reflection on life's challenges. His work has always involved the use of color and texture in abstract forms. The Threshold paintings are an immersion into the space and color reflected in the environment of the Mojave Desert. The paintings are oil-based on canvas using pure pigment paints. Each work becomes a meditative experience of perception allowing the mind to melt into the landscape. "The journey of my internal landscape has led me to the use of light and color to uplift the spirit." | www.fredart.net
Mike McLain's work combines pattern, line, and color in ways that encourage optical disturbance, visual discord, and moments of illusory dimension within the flatness of the picture plane. The use of gingham fabric and whimsical shapes adds a casual, lighthearted quality to an otherwise serious investigation of abstraction that shifts and moves as the viewer's gaze lingers. "My goal is to upend normal habits of observation, skewing our understanding of what the eye sees and the mind interprets." | www.mikemclainart.com
