Nudes from the Studio: Arye Shapiro
On view: September 1- 30, 2022 on Artsy
Asher Grey Gallery
November 1 - 30, 2022
For the past 24 years, Arye Shapiro has been producing figurative sculptures, drawings, and oil paintings. His respect for people and his familiarity with European art endow his work with individual beauty, subtle grace, and the quiet sensuality of life. "My figurative art is a vehicle for expressing human emotions and spirituality as well as physical attributes."
Working in his studio in Austin, TX, Shapiro schedules live models for weekly three-hour sessions and often works on the same pose for one to two months, which he describes as an open-ended collaboration. The model selects the pose and interacts with an item of personal significance. Shapiro reflects on the process: "After I make many quick gesture drawings of my model in various poses, we agree on the pose that is both most interesting to me and comfortable for them. Next, I make more detailed drawings and small painting studies. Then I paint on a larger framed canvas with dimensions that support good composition. I mix bright complementary colors to create more neutral skin tones surrounded by a contrasting environment."
Raised in New York City, Shapiro was exposed to many of the world's top visual and performing arts venues. After earning a Ph.D. in physics, he continued the creative interests of his youth and attended art classes in community centers, various colleges, and master workshops around the country. Over this period, he refined his artistic skills with figure drawing and anatomy studies. For the past two decades, Shapiro helped other artists explore figurative art by coordinating weekly life drawing, painting, and sculpture sessions for the community at the Austin Visual Arts Association, the Austin Sculpture Center, and other locations. Shapiro has recently completed his 28th commission. His work for private clients exemplifies his skill and flexibility and includes life-sized bronze busts of union leaders, a sculpture of a nude couple, a processional crucifix, an exterior tile mosaic for a friary, a painting of a beach in Hawaii, a relief sculpture for a bathroom, and an outdoor wire sculpture of three dancers.
