Donkeyland

I make large, colorful, and stylized portraits and narratives. My art is done with a purposeful anti-design. I portray my characters in a positive light, almost reverentially, but there's always a wink -wink celebratory tone to my work. Humor, without mockery. The paintings are celebrations of ridiculousness.
In the recent body of work, I decided to tap into my daily inspiration: donkeys. I teach beginning drawing at Moreno Valley College and figurative life drawing at San Bernardino Valley College. My commute travels through Reche Canyon, affectionately known as Donkeyland because of the wild burros that inhabit the area. I act as a storyteller from a complex perspective of hybridization. I’m both utopian and pissed. Dialogues begin to appear in my paintings. Pop culture merges with traditional culture. Please enjoy my anecdotes and bizarre compositions. My humorous environments allow me to play with stereotypes and create both counter-histories and my own futures. |
