Transformations
JAMES O'KEEFE: Transformations
On view: August 15 - September 30, 2021 on Artsy
Presented by Asher Grey Gallery
Over the last several years, O'Keefe's paintings have become more minimal, following the principle that less is more. In addition, he tried to push out in all directions from the traditional rectangle, adding other rectangles to the sides of the paintings and the tops. These shaped wood surfaces suggest that other paintings may be merging into or out of each painting. O'Keefe reflects, "The ideas for these paintings arose from the processes of painting itself. It occurred to me that one painting was just a stepping stone to the next and that the time intervals between paintings were of equal importance. So I came to feel that paintings are not so much completed objects as they are transitional objects." Influences pass between one painting and the next and on into future paintings. This transitional quality, found in the making of paintings, propels his research at this time.
